I’m not sure why I did it.

It started when a coworker and I were talking about ex-CMB first class fares. He was planning a trip to Bhutan later in the year, and he thought it might be a fun way to come back. And then we heard that we were getting Friday off at work after a series of successful launches, so he started thinking about booking this fare for this weekend.

As I was helping him figure out his flights, I stupidly decided that I should come along as well. After all, who wants to fly around the world alone? My coworker’s itinerary is slightly more sane than mine in that he’s actually spending a couple of days in Singapore, so I’m meeting him in Singapore and then we’re flying back together.

Here’s my final itinerary:

  • SFO to ICN in United Business
  • ICN to SIN in Singapore Business
  • SIN to CMB in Singapore Business
  • CMB to DOH in Qatar Business
  • DOH to DXB in Qatar First (on a 787, no less, for a 1 hour flight)
  • DXB to LHR in Emirates First (A380, which means shower time in the sky!)
  • LHR to SFO in British Airways First

I should have connectivity most of the way, but if you don’t hear from me in a week or so, I’m probably stuck in Sri Lanka.

  1. Can you tell us how do you plan your trips by miles, points or all cash? It would be very helpful for readers to plan their trip!

    1. Sure, I’ll definitely write some posts on that for future trips. For this trip in particular, I redeemed 60k United miles for a one-way business class ticket to Colombo, and then purchased a paid first class fare out of Colombo back to the US (on a fare that no longer really exists as it used to). The only place where I overnighted was in Seoul, where I stayed with a friend, so not hotel costs for the trip.
