SEA 2014: Singapore Airlines The Private Room Lounge Review (SIN)
One of the primary reasons why I wanted to end my southeast Asia trip in Singapore was to depart Singapore in Singapore Airlines first class. Or more specifically, Suites Class, as I chose to fly back to the US via NRT and LAX instead of through ICN or HKG straight to SFO just so I could fly Suites (just as an FYI, these flights took place over 6 months ago).
I first tried to get a shuttle from my hotel to the airport, and they wouldn’t do that. Then I tried to get a taxi, and they also wouldn’t do that. So I ended up taking MRT, which wasn’t ideal, but it was super cheap and took about an hour.
First class has a separate check-in facility for people being dropped off in cars. To get there from the MRT station, I had to exit the terminal and walk outside. It’s immediately past the end of the main terminal, so not as far as the Lufthansa First Class Terminal walk for example.
Part of the reason to use the first class check-in is that there’s a separate immigration line for first class passengers, and it exits out directly in front of the lounge with the Private Room inside.
I can understand why people don’t rave about the Private Room: it’s a physically nice space, but there isn’t anything that really stands out about it. But honestly, I appreciate good service and privacy more than rubber ducks or massages or hot tubs, and in that regard, I felt it was a great lounge.
There isn’t that much to the lounge. There’s plenty of seating given the number of people who can actually access the Private Room, and there are a couple of small privater rooms, but besides that, there’s just the dining area.
Breakfast in the lounge was decent. I ended up trying a number of things off the menu, and the food was fine, but not anything to get excited about. I think the only lounge where I really get excited about the food is the JAL First Class Lounge…
I had the french toast, two fried eggs over medium, the roti prata, and finally asked for some avocado toast since I saw they had avocados near the self-service area. The avocado was unfortunately not very ripe.
Overall, I think this is a fine first class lounge offering. There aren’t any bells or whistles, but it’s private, the service is attentive, and there’s decent food and wifi. It’s true, though, that Singapore’s ground services and lounges are nowhere close to the standard that they have in the air.
