If you’re looking to redeem for first class travel using United or US Airways miles, Asiana is a good place to look, especially if you’re looking far enough in advance. It’s got a great first class product, and they consistently release 2 first class seats on several of their routes to/from the US right when schedules open up.
However, they also have blackout dates for peak season, which means you can’t redeem your partner miles for Asiana awards on those dates. Here’s the relevant information on blackout dates for 2013 and 2014:
- Segments departing the US: 5/11/2013 to 6/30/2013 and 12/7/2013 to 12/22/2013; 5/16/2014 to 7/6/2014 and 12/6/2014 to 12/23/2014
- Any other international segments: 7/25/2013 to 8/26/2013; 9/17/2013 to 9/22/2013; 12/24/2013 to 1/12/2014; 1/24/2014 to 2/2/2014; 7/24/2014 to 8/25/2014; 9/5/2014 to 9/9/2014; and 12/24/2014 to 12/31/2014
Unfortunately, a lot of these dates are when many of us want to travel (e.g. around the winter holidays or during the summer), but if you can be a little flexible in your travel schedule, Asiana can be a great use of your miles.
